Practice makes perfect.
It is quite easy to sing those words but how well do you integrate the phrase into your life and career? Every serious writer would want to become better at all costs but how many put in the work?
Again, we are back to thinking and talking about goals but doing nothing about them. Anyone can do that. What singles you out and determines your progress is the action you take towards achieving the set goal.
So, you want to become a better writer? What are you doing about it?
Of course, you have to learn the basics, polish your grammar and master your niche. We pay attention to all of these, but can we talk about how consistency also plays a huge role in helping us become better writers?
Growing up as a child, we all learned to write the alphabet, per letter, and collectively- A-Z. No child ever masters the alphabet by trying to write the letter A in one day and dropping the pencil, hoping to conveniently write the entire alphabet when next they pick it up.
The learning has to be consistent; strokes after strokes, multiple erase, another stroke, picking up the pencil right after dropping it, one more stroke, day after day until they get it right.
The same applies to becoming a better writer. You don’t just write one morning and then drop the pen until the next blue moon and expect to be a better writer. It doesn’t work that way.
Here is what happens when you write consistently:
- It helps to hone your writing skills
- You learn new things from writing, especially from your niche
- Your mind is open to new ideas and you get to read more, which expands your knowledge base
- There is a lesser tendency to have writer’s block
In my post on Don’t Wait For Inspiration Before You Write, I mentioned how to stay inspired to write often. You can apply that here and see how you can be consistent.
However, remember that it isn’t just about writing all the time, but doing the right thing and implementing the new things you learn as you write.
You will never become a better writer if you keep making the same mistakes and deliberately not making any effort to hone your writing skills. Always remember that your writeups represent you and if not for anything, honor your brand and don’t consistently put out crappy work.
Let the growth be visible in your work.
